General Harmar sent an attacking force on October 22, aiming to trap the Miami in Kekionga. U.S. forces positioned along the St. Joseph river, while others crossed the Maumee River. The Miami warriors, led by Little Turtle, challenged the crossing, inflicting casualties. The main U.S. forces were defeated, with Major Wyllys and Major Fontaine killed. By midday, 183 U.S. soldiers and an estimated equal number of Indians lay dead. The Miami Confederacy held Kekionga, and General Harmar's forces retreated to Fort Washington.
